The Open Boat is a short story by Stephen Crane. In the story, there are men in a boat that is a drift at sea, where anything could happen to them. The captain tries to save his men but all of his efforts have no effect on the outcome. The men are all in the hands of fate. If nature did not want any of them to survive, their efforts, no matter how great, would have been in vain. This is fatalism because all of their outcomes were predetermined and they could not do anything to save themselves from their own fate.

This piece is titled Fatalism and is by the Dutch-Indonesian painter Jan Toorop. The painting depicts a figure in black which is believed to be "fate" itself. It is surrounded by people that are just following it. They cannot control their own actions, it is all up to fate. That is what makes this a visual depiction of Fatalism. No one has power over what they do. They are not in control, fate is.
